This week, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) until 15 November.
Abyei is the disputed area along the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
The resolution also extended the mission’s support to the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JBVMM), which was established in 2011 to conduct monitoring and verification activities along the border between Sudan and South Sudan until 15 November.
renews the mandate of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei for a period of six months, without making changes to the mandate or structure of the force, as set out in resolution 2609 of 15 December 2021.
.due to the suggestions received in the Secretary-General’s Strategic Review in September 2021 (S/2021/805), the resolution 2609 reduced the authorized force ceiling for the Mission from 3,500 to 3,250 members, while maintaining the maximum authorized policing at 640 police personnel.
